We felt that – especially in our bubble – many of the ideas held by supporters of so-called “high” art and culture often collide with those they view as “low”
– just as their own ideas are confronted by the others in return. In our eyes, this leads to unnecessary gatekeeping or the rejection of other disciplines.
That’s what we wanted to address with our digital magazine ok,kult. It’s main purpose was to share as much insight about as many of those disciplines as possible. Of course, we knew that – since ok,kult was a self-organized “free semester project” – this wasn’t going to be a magazine with weekly releases. That’s why we developed it as a concept based on this simultaneous, contrast-rich, and provocative design style – something we were really into at the time, but also found fitting for a concept including openness to all forms of discourse and without the need to be liked by anyone. We were happy to create friction and thoughts with our visual approach.
So, the design ended up being quite straightforward, with a constant shift from chaos to strict visual hierarchies. We aimed to ride the edge of stimulating simultaneity and complete visual overload in our designs.

From the typeface to the colors, everything stands in strong contrast to one another, yet maintains balance overall. For instance, the extremely condensed headline font acts as an eye-catcher, while influencing the icons, thereby creating unity.
Our UI-elements also followed that same concept. This led us to challenge usability and explore how digital reading and reader navigation could function within a highly dynam-ic design environment.

What is art and culture – and why isn’t it truly inclusive?

6

We created this digital magazine with the aim of engaging as many different disciplines of art and culture as possible, while also developing a general concept as a foundation for exchange and discourse.

We learned a lot by exploring the edges of usability and readability
– and also by knowingly crossing them and playing with it.
